■ Introduction

Ash treads extend from a single central spine steel stringer, creating a floating, open effect. Toughened glass balustrades are fixed with bespoke brushed copper adaptor details, introduced to complement the client’s existing copper features throughout the house. The tapered ash handrail follows the stair’s flow, adding warmth and continuity.

■ The Challenge

For our popular central spine design, the client wanted a feature step in same solid ash timber as the other treads. At 112 mm thick, it was oversized and challenging to handle, needing to fit seamlessly around the central spine with no visible joins, while perfectly matching the rest of the staircase.

■ The Solution

A steel frame and ply template enabled a two-stage installation for precise alignment. The lower section was temporarily removed during final timber and glass installation, allowing the feature step to sit flawlessly. Careful attention to material and grain ensured a seamless, cohesive detail that enhances the staircase’s elegance.
