Find answers to all of your questions

Our FAQs cover the most common questions about our bespoke staircases, including design options, measurements, materials, lead times, pricing, and delivery. Whether you’re an architect, builder, or homeowner, this page is designed to help you understand our process, what’s involved in manufacturing a custom metal staircase, and how to prepare for installation. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, our team is always happy to help with tailored advice.

  • What style staircase can have open treads?

All of our styles can feature open treads, creating a visually light and elegant look. Open risers work best when there’s an open space or architectural feature behind, allowing light to flow and enhancing the sense of space. If there’s just a wall behind, the effect can feel heavy or dark — in this case, a closed tread design might be better and could also provide the opportunity for clever under-stair storage.

  • How are the spindles seamlessly attached to the Carbon Stringer?

We weld studs directly to the tread plate. The base of each spindle is then carefully drilled and tapped, allowing it to secure cleanly onto the stud through discreet through holes in the plate. The result is a seamless, minimalist finish.

  • Are there any specific joist requirements?

We recommend using a steel beam as the trimming joist for the best support, but we have successfully worked with a variety of other joist materials. If you're using posi-joists, we advise lining them with structural plywood to ensure adequate strength and stability. For more specific guidance tailored to your project, please speak to one of our team members. We’re happy to assist!

  • My walls are not structural, will this be a problem?

Not at all. Every project is unique, and there are many ways to work around this. Simply give us a call, and we can discuss your specific situation and offer solutions to ensure your staircase is securely installed, even if your walls are not structural.

  • Does everything just bolt together?

Yes, most of the staircase components bolt together using a variety of fixing methods, making the installation process straightforward. The only time you may need some joinery skill is if you choose a continuous handrail system. In this case, the handrail is supplied oversized so it can be cut and joined on site to fit your specific requirements.

  • Do you provide structural calculations?

While we design and manufacture your staircase to the highest standards, it is your responsibility to ensure that the structure of the building is substantial enough to support the staircase. Structural calculations should be completed by your team or a structural engineer. We are more than happy to liaise with your structural engineer to advise on the design and ensure everything aligns. Alternatively, we can offer structural calculation services as an additional service should you require it. Let us know how we can assist with this part of the process!

  • How is the staircase fixed to the floor? Underfloor heating?

The staircase is fixed to the floor using a base plate fixing, which we design according to your specific building requirements. There are multiple methods for fixing the staircase, ensuring it’s secure and stable. If you have underfloor heating, it's important to consider this early on in the design process, as adjustments may be needed to ensure proper installation without damaging the heating system. It’s always best to get in touch with us at an early stage so we can advise on any preparations or considerations required for your particular setup.

  • Do I have to have a handrail on top of the glass?

We always recommend having a handrail somewhere on the staircase, whether it’s on the balustrade or the wall for added safety. However, if you prefer not to have a handrail on top of the glass, we recommend using 17.5mm laminated toughened glass instead, which meets safety standards without the need for an additional handrail. As regulations can vary, we advise you to double-check with your building control officer to ensure compliance with local safety guidelines.

  • Does a cantilever staircase fix directly to the wall?

Yes, cantilever staircases are anchored directly to a structural wall. For a secure installation, the wall must be a minimum of 140mm thick high density (7n) concrete block wall. If this isn't the case there are other methods available, please speak to our Design Team!

  • I’ve seen a design I like elsewhere, can you make that?

Yes, we can often accommodate different designs. Simply add a few images of the design you like to your enquiry form or attach them in an email, and we will do our best to bring your vision to life. Let us know, and we’ll work with you to create a staircase that meets your exact requirements.

  • Can you manufacture external metal staircases?

Yes, all of our designs can be adapted for external environments. We can also galvanise the staircase to provide added protection against the elements, ensuring durability and longevity in outdoor settings.

  • Can you stain the treads to match the colour of my floor?

Yes, we offer a specialist stain service to match the colour of your flooring. Simply send us a sample of your floor finish, and we will provide a stain sample for you to confirm. This ensures your treads complement your floor perfectly for a cohesive look.

  • Do you supply all of the fixings we need?

Yes, we supply a complete fixing kit and touch up kit should you require one. If your design requires chemical anchors, we ask that you source these yourself as they will be specific to various structural requirements.

  • What timber options do you have?

Our most popular timber option is Oak, which we stock in large quantities. However, we can also source other timbers such as Walnut, Ash, and a variety of others upon request. If you're looking for a specific wood, just let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs. Please note that lead times may vary depending on availability.

Yes, well-designed stairs can increase the value of your home. A visually appealing staircase can serve as a focal point in your interior, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space. Staircases that are both stylish and functional-especially when they maximize space or create a unique feature-are attractive to potential buyers. Investing in a high-quality, custom staircase can be a great way to enhance your home's appeal and potential resale value.

  • Are metal stairs cheaper than wood?

Generally, metal stairs can be more cost-effective than wooden staircases, especially when considering long-term durability and maintenance. Metal staircases require less upkeep and are highly resistant to wear, making them a great investment. However, the overall cost depends on factors like design complexity, materials, and finishes. Wooden stairs, especially with premium materials and intricate designs, can be more expensive due to the labor-intensive process and material costs. Ultimately, the choice between metal and wood depends on your design preferences, budget, and the style you're aiming for. Our team can help you explore options within your budget and ensure you get the best value for your staircase.

Textured Finishes – A lightly brushed or grooved surface for added traction. Anti-Slip Coatings – A clear or tinted treatment applied to the tread surface.

  • What powder coat finishes are available for your metal stairs?

Yes, cantilever staircases are anchored directly to a structural wall. For a secure installation, the wall must be a 140mm block wall with blocks rated at 7 Newtons for strength.

  • What tread thickness options are available?

Tread thickness varies depending on the staircase design: Closed, Zig-Zag, or Sawtooth Stringers – Standard tread thickness is 32mm. However, if you prefer a flush finish with rebated tread tabs, we can provide a 40mm option. Central Spine Staircases – Our oak treads for this design have a substantial 112mm thickness, offering a bold and striking look. If you have specific design preferences, our team can discuss custom options to achieve the perfect aesthetic and structural balance.

  • How does the stair fit to the floor?

All our stringers feature a precision engineered foot plate for a secure connection. We recommend either fixing the staircase directly to the structural slab, or shuttering out a space where the staircase will connect and installing or pouring a concrete pad for it to sit on.
