■ Introduction

This winding staircase combines open oak treads with a clamped glass balustrade to create a light, flowing connection between levels. The open riser arrangement allows light to pass through the stair, while the glass balustrade reinforces a sense of openness without interrupting the overall form. A round oak handrail sits comfortably within the glass, providing a tactile contrast and tying the stair back to the surrounding materials.

■ The Challenge

The staircase needed to follow a conventional winding layout while incorporating a clamped glass balustrade, ensuring the system worked comfortably through the turns. At the same time, the structure had to sit naturally within the oak-framed interior, avoiding anything that felt overly rigid or imposed.

■ The Solution

our proven clamped glass design was adapted to suit the winding tread arrangement, maintaining clarity and consistency throughout the stair. Sweeping curves were introduced to the stringers, allowing them to blend smoothly into the surrounding architecture and soften the transitions between levels. This approach created a staircase that feels both technically resolved and architecturally considered within the new-build setting.
