■ Introduction
Embedded toughened glass balustrades are paired with a continuous tapered oak handrail running centrally over two stacked staircases, creating a seamless, flowing line through the space. Chunky 40 mm oak treads add presence and warmth, while the unusual green powder-coated steel introduces a surprising, contemporary accent that complements the interior. The stair’s elegant geometry and materials combine to produce a bold yet refined statement.

■ The Challenge
Two flights of stairs were stacked, requiring a continuous flow from bottom to top. Integrating a central oak handrail and coordinating a bespoke wall handrail on the lower floor, while maintaining clean fixings, added complexity. The client also requested the powder-coated steel to match the exterior window frames, which was not a standard colour.
■ The Solution
The location of the stair was adjusted, bringing the stair forward to ensure is was continuous from base to top. The lower-floor handrail was carefully detailed with a mix of steel fixings and oak, maintaining visual continuity. For the powder coating, custom colours were produced using reference timber samples, resulting in a perfect match to the windows and a cohesive finish across all steelwork.
■ Words from the Client
“
Ben and his team are a pleasure to work with. They were great from the start of the project straight through to the customer aftercare. We knew the staircase we asked them to design was challenging but their high standards from site surveys to manufacturing and delivery was very impressive. We will be working with The Metal Staircase Company again.
