■ Introduction
Embedded toughened glass balustrades set into steel channels conceal all fixings, with no handrail above for a clean, uninterrupted edge. A bespoke flat bar steel wall handrail with integrated LED strip provides discreet lighting without affecting the treads. Solid oak treads in Havana stain add warmth. The open first-floor landing features 3 m of glass to maximise light, with three balconies all finished in rounded oak handrails for continuity and differentiation from the stair.

■ The Challenge
Our customer wanted a custom wall-mounted handrail to the stair and integrated lighting, without introducing lighting into the treads. The challenge was designing a bespoke steel handrail that could accommodate lighting.
■ The Solution
We designed and manufactured a bespoke flat bar steel handrail to the stair, with a concealed channel to house a strip light, welded underneath to maintain a clean, minimal profile. To add more details and make the most of having a landing and three balconies, we used rounded oak handrails to add more textures to the space.
To help manage costs, clamped glass was used within the landing rather than continuing the embedded steel channel used on the stair balustrade. The client concealed the fixings during installation, achieving a neat, well-finished result.
